Due to the tireless efforts in maintaining the A.M.E. Men's Shelter in Raleigh, N.C., and the renovations recently completed including new tile flooring, new kitchen, modernized marble shower stalls and a new freezer, it was officially renamed and dedicated as the A.M.E. Empowerment Center on Saturday, September 19, 2015.
The dedication was preceded by a worship service hosted by St. Paul A.M.E. - Raleigh where Sister Shirley Sheares, Empowerment Center Director, served as the evening's worship leader. We were favored by music provided by the St. Paul A.M.E. Church Choir and a powerful proclaimed word by guest preacher, Reverend Dr. Staccato Powell, Pastor of Grace A.M.E. Zion Church - Raleigh, N.C. Who spoke from Matthew 25 reminding us to know God for yourself and let your works speak for you - that's the bottom line !
Most notably were the tearful and emotional words of celebration given by the Empowerment Center residents. We can all learn a lesson from them that - your condition is not your conclusion !

All donations can be made to the Washington Conference placing The Empowerment Center in the memo section of your checks. The Empowerment Center is the only one open 24-hr / 7 day per week. The Problem: Homelessness is a problem that is occurring with increased frequency in the cities and towns of North Carolina. The N.C. Department of Human Resources reports a 50% increase in the number of persons seeking shelter in Raleigh, the state capitol.
Our Challenge: Recognizing the growing numbers of homeless persons in the City of Raleigh, N.C., the Women’s Missionary Society (WMS) of the Western North Carolina (WNC) Annual Conference, in 1987, pledged to carry out the goal of the Connectional WMS to help the plight of the homeless.
Our Response: The WNC Conference Branch WMS opened the AME Church Empowerment Center in Raleigh in April, 1988, with the assistance of Mrs. Shirley J. Sheares, Founder, and others. Seeking to provide more than just shelter, the AME Church Empowerment Center attempts to make constructive use of the daylight hours to coordinate vital city services (i.e. social, medical, employment) in ways that help homeless persons solve the problems that create and sustain their homeless condition Need More information?
